ABOUT ARTWORK +
Alec Soth (rhymes with "both") made his name with "Sleeping By the Mississippi" in 2004. Rooted in the tradition of Robert Frank, William Eggleston and Walker Evans, Soth spent five years working his way down the Mississippi River and documenting the people and places he saw with his 8 x 10 camera. The result was richly descriptive, large-format colour photographs of an eclectic mix of individuals, landscapes, and interiors. "Venice is the furthest south you can travel the Mississippi by car," says Soth in his notes to this photograph. It shows a bed frame chocked by the abundance of stuff growing around and through it. The bed is sleeping in a bed of leaves and grass.
