ABOUT ARTWORK +
Since studying at Kunstakademie Düsseldorf (1977-1985), Thomas Ruff has explored the possibilities of photography with a wide range of different series. He started off with "Interieurs" (late-1970s German interior decoration) and got his breakthrough with "Porträts" (passport-style portraits of fellow Kunstakademie students, printed at monumental size). "Haus nr. 8 I" is taken from the 1987-1991 series "Hauser", where Ruff photographed ordinary and dull suburban buildings, devoid of human presence and shot in the style of architectural photography. In subsequent series, Ruff abandoned analogue photography and began working with appropriated images: "Sterne" (astronomical panoramas from the European Southern Observatory)", "Nudes" (pornographic images from the web), "Subtrates" (Japanese manga comics manipulated into colourful abstractions), ma.r.s (images of Mars taken from Nasa’s online archive), and many more. Ruff has been described as “a master of edited and reimagined images”, and his works are held in museum collections worldwide.
