Andreas Gursky's (1955) photographs are big, bold, rich in color and detail. Documenting the global, high-tech, fast-paced contemporary world, he has photographed everything from buildings and architecture to trading floors, nightclubs, and 99 cent stores. His images are artfully manipulated digitally to create desired effects. Compositional systems and patterns move your eye around the picture. The view point is always from on high and distanced, and the anonymous individual is but one among many. "Breitscheider Kreuz" is taken in 1990, when Gursky expanded his scope from local Düsseldorf and its environments (Sunday leisure, local tourism, family outings, hiking trips) to the complex, globalized world.
